The go-ahead has been given for the formation of an Emirates Green Building Council.

The Dubai Department of Economic Development has given initial approval for the setting up of the body that aims to promote and push forward the implementation of high-performance environmentally friendly building principles.

The formation of Emirates GBC falls in line with recent decisions by the Government to commit to reducing carbon emissions in the UAE and culminated in the signing of the Kyoto Protocol. It would be the first such Council in the Middle East.

The initiative to establish an Emirates GBC emerged during the First International Conference on Green Buidings, which was held in Dubai during May last year. The Emirates GBC is expected to join the World Green Building Council. Founding members of the Council include RMJM and Atkins, both of whom have a strong presence in the Middle East.
