Local authorities And other major employers are set to discuss investing in homes for staff who cannot otherwise afford to live close to their workplace.
Housing Corporation chair Baroness Brenda Dean has written to the Local Government Association, the Confederation of British Industry, major public employers and senior civil servants, asking for a meeting on the issue.

A source who had seen the letter said: “The Corporation is proposing a high-level meeting to gauge the commitment of large employers to invest in housing for their staff.

“It is clear there is a lot of effort going into how to address the issue of employer contributions to house employees.”

The possibility of employers contributing to staff housing has been gaining support since a recent London Housing Federation report on the issue. It is understood the report was included with Dean’s letter.

A Housing Corporation spokeswoman said: “We are looking to talk to as many stakeholders as possible to reach solutions.”
