Professor David King, the government's chief scientific advisor, has launched a review of energy research, development and demonstration activities.
Requested by Patricia Hewitt, the secretary of state for trade and industry, the review will examine the overall level of expenditure on activities; how well it is targeted and where the gaps are; and who should maintain an overview of future expenditure.
It will look at the full range of energy sources and the conclusions will be fed into the review of the energy policy being conducted by the Performance and Innovation Unit (PIU).
