On 13 December 2005 the European Parliament passed the Energy End-Use Efficiency and Energy Services Directive, meaning that there is now a European law mandating better standards of metering throughout the EU.
BEAMA Energy director, Dr Howard Porter, said: "With EU member states looking for energy-saving initiatives to meet targets set out in national Energy Efficiency Plans, smart metering solutions are ideal for the UK. They will ensure the designated Directive requirement that ‘meters and systems measure accurately and frequently customers' actual energy consumption; that billing is informative, sufficiently frequent and based on actual energy consumption'."
The Directive imposes a general energy end-use savings target of 1% per year for nine years (2008-2017). The overall 9% target is to be met by the ninth year with an intermediate target set in the third year.
