A consortium of engineering bodies is to sponsor three schools hoping to achieve specialist school status from September 2002.
Eckington School in Sheffield, Devonport High School for Boys in Plymouth, and Woodchurch High School in Merseyside are to receive a total of £150 000 in sponsorship.

The schools were chosen because they are in areas with acute engineering skills shortages.

The sponsoring consortium comprises of the Engineering Employers' Federation, the National Training Organisation for Engineering and Manufacture, the Machine Tool Technologies Association, the Engineering Council, the Engineering Development Trust, and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Ann Bailey, EEF head of education and skills, says: "Engineering specialist schools have the potential to provide innovative teaching approaches to subjects related to engineering. This is vital in providing all students with an understanding of the role engineering has to play in ensuring competitiveness and productivity in the UK".

The schools will know in June 2002 if they have achieved specialist status.
