The results of an Oscar Faber-led project into hvac strategies for well-insulated airtight buildings have been published by CIBSE.
The DTI-funded Partners in Innovation scheme looked at the potential for high performance building envelopes to simplify the design and operation of hvac systems.

The study represents a significant shift from current design norms and offers a number of benefits to building owners and operators. In particular it looks at the elimination of perimeter heating, significant reductions in heating and cooling plant capacity, and the simplification of controls installation and strategy.

The design approach adopted in the study also offers an effective solution to many of the challenges set out in the revised Part L regulations that come into force on 1 April this year.

Proposals to build a demonstration as part of a commercial development are currently under consideration.
