The number of men and women who are registered with the Engineering Council UK as engineering technicians has risen for the third consecutive year.

CIBSE is among the eight institutions that account for more then 80% of the 2007 intake.

At the end of 2007 there were 13,463 people on the EngTech register, 839 of whom had been added during 2007.

More than half were from three institutions – the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE), the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) and the Welding Institute (TWI).

The other four top institutions in 2007 in terms of new EngTech registrants were: the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM), the Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE), and the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE).

The latest survey of registrants shows that in 2007, mean annual earnings for engineering technicians had reached £37,636, up 11.5% on 2005.
