Fordhams has become well known for promoting green buildings and its use of techniques which include natural lighting and ventilation. It has also pioneered sustainable technologies including biomass heating, solar and wind power, rainwater recycling, and using the ground as a thermal store.
The award also recognises the organisation's inclusive ethos. All employees are invited to become partners after four years which the practice believes engenders a strong sense of commitment. Fordhams also recruits graduates from a variety of backgrounds and trains them in all aspects of environmental and building services engineering.
Founded in 1966, the practice has a staff of 120 and offices in London, Cambridge and Edinburgh.

Mott MacDonald has also scooped a Queen's Award for Enterprise for outstanding achievement in international trade. This is the third time the company has won the award in the past nine years. Its international projects include Dubai Marina, Mall of the Emirates and the Eureka Tower in Melbourne.
