A new guideline on the specification of equal and approved luminaires has been issued by the industry’s lighting and electrical bodies to ensure that lighting installations provide the required performance, as specified in the original design.

The document comes in response to the common practice of proposing alternative luminaires during the procurement stage of a project and the subsequent possibility of reprisals if the installed system underperforms.

The ECA, Lighting Industry Federation, Institution of Lighting Engineers (ILE) and Society of Light and Lighting launched the document at the ILE conference on 28 September.

The document includes criteria on lighting performance, energy efficiency, luminaire construction, electrical safety, aesthetic appearance and ongoing maintenance requirements. It also clarifies who is responsible for assessing alternatives.
