The EU published its Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPD) in early January.
The directive has far-reaching implications for owners, operators and developers of buildings in the UK.

The key provisions of the directive include minimum requirements for energy performance of all new buildings and large existing buildings subejct to major renovation. The law also requires energy certification of all buildings and regular mandatory inspection of all boilers and air conditioning systems in buildings.

Seventeen organisations in the UK, including CIBSE, have formed a Directive Implementation Advisory Group (DIAG) to help government implement the directive. DIAG's acting chairman, David Strong of BRE said the directive offers the opportunity to achieve a major change in building-related energy efficiency. He added: "Practical implementation of the directive will be very demanding and there is a pressing need to start essential preparatory work as quickly as possible."
