According to government sources, a fifth of all public buildings in England and Wales have the worst energy performance rating available.

A spokesperson for the Department for Communities and Local Government confirmed that of almost 9,000 buildings given DECs last year, 1,514 were given the lowest possible rating of a G, and that over 75% scored a D rating or lower.

The figures were compiled by the department for Communities and Local Government.

As of last year, all buildings over 1,000m2 which are regularly visited by the public must have a DEC on display.
