From 1 April 2005 the ODPM will implement the requirement for unique reference numbers (URN) for fire protection and alarm systems in association with the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA).

The policy will have a phased introduction over three years to allow systems and management strategies to be brought up to the required standards. The ECA is in the process of ensuring that members will have access to an approved third-party accreditation scheme.
