Fireborn from Ibstock is a range of perforated terracotta blocks in a large-format panel design that is an ultimately more durable alternative to rainscreen cladding.
The blocks come in red, buff and blue and lengths range from 215mm to 327mm with a height and depth of 215mm by 102mm. The cut is accurate to within 2mm. At around 10kg, each block is relatively lightweight, making for easy handling, and the large format consumes less mortar than traditional brickwork.

Fireborn accessories include Ibstock's large-format universal joint for easy decorative returns and angles, plus a range of cut and bonded specials.

Ibstock has also launched Spiral Brick, which gives a barley-sugar twist effect. A single plumbline is required to align the perpendicular joints. Spiral Brick comes in three designs: clockwise twist, anticlockwise twist and pineapple effect. A 400mm diameter column with a 180mm square central space can be built with standard-size Spiral Bricks.

Another innovation from the company is Tilebrick, a standard clay unit with a shaped and angled front face and an overhanging lower lip that gives the look of a tiled exterior. Tilebrick allows housebuilders to take tile-hung walls from foundation to eaves and eliminates the need to recruit skilled tile hangers – an even scarcer resource than bricklayers.
