English Partnerships has shortlisted five consortia of housing associations and private developers to work on the 3500-home London-wide housing initiative, a pilot for a potential 15,000-home scheme in the capital.
They will draw up detailed plans for three of the sites that EP has assembled in Catford, Elephant & Castle and East India Dock. They must submit plans by 30 September and EP will choose two or three of the consortia to build the 3500 homes.
John Lewis, director of EP's strategic joint ventures division, said the idea was to find new ways for the development industry to build houses, and particularly to use modern methods of construction.
He said: "Housing associations have been telling us that they can't use modern methods of construction on a site-by-site basis. But we've got a portfolio of land, so can they deliver now?"
The five consortia comprise:
- Countryside Properties, housing associations Acton, Hyde , Metropolitan and Presentation Housing Association
- Quintain Estates, Assettrust Housing, Laing O'Rourke, associations Genesis and Family
- key-worker developer First Base, ABROS Enterprise, Bank of Scotland, Boleyn & Forest, Lend Lease Europe, London & Quadrant, Southern Housing Homeownership and Stanhope
- Taylor Woodrow Developments, Wates Construction, Network Housing Group and Moat Housing Group
- Circle 33, Notting Hill Homeownership, Willmott Dixon Housing and Berkeley Partnership Homes.
