The new addition to Newcastle Airport is being hailed as a triumph of construction and teamwork by all the parties involved.
"A flagship project for the north-east" built with a "non-adversarial and integrated team approach". Just two of the plaudits garlanding the new international terminal at Newcastle Airport.

Main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine and m&e specialist Haden Young worked as joint venture partners on the contract which was brought in £31 000 under budget and two months ahead of schedule.

The emphasis throughout the project was on teamwork. Haden Young's customer care manager Lizz Noller, brought in to organise events, said: "Building teams is about building relationships. It is only worthwhile if you begin early enough and with the right people – a mix of decision- makers and those working on-site." To avoid confrontation, the team approach included a 50-50 cost saving scheme. A risk transfer clause was also set up for the project, under which the joint venture carried responsibility for risk during the construction phase.
