The effects of a 'claims culture' have already been seen in the insurance industry. They are being further compounded by the greed of 'no win, no fee' solicitors and claims consultants who can take fees of up to four times the value of the average claim.
As insurers reduce their losses by raising premiums or ceasing to write Employer's Liability cover, the knock-on effects on British industry are all too clear – many businesses will fail.
Most of the noise surrounding the EU is about the pound and sovereignty. But look at the wider picture: directives that were intended to assist with health and safety have already burdened many companies.
While we would all applaud any measures that improve health and safety, this should not be achieved by putting industry out of business and ensuring that no hazardous employment exists. Perhaps it is time for the government to reconsider its subservient acceptance of EU instructions and look at the wider economic implications of their actions.
