A £125m deal to refurbish and extend Manchester shopping centre takes contractor into lead position.
Bovis Lend Lease assumed top spot in the contractors' league table for August after winning three contracts worth £145.5m.

The biggest was a £125m deal to refurbish and extend the Arndale centre in Manchester.

Ballast, the Dutch-owned contractor up for sale, moved into second place with two contracts worth £126m. Yorkshire-based Shepherd made it into the top three with five contract worth £82.7m.

Sir Robert McAlpine, Skanska and Kier held on to the three top places in the contractors' yearly table and the Ministry of Defence occupied the high ground on the clients' table.

HOK and Building Design Partnership top the UK architects league, although Chapman Taylor moved from 18th to 4th place.

How the tables work

To qualify for the tables, companies must have been identified on two or more projects fitting the criteria below in the past 12 months. Projects must:
  • be of precisely calculated or confirmed value
  • have reached the main contract stage
  • be valued at £1m or more
  • be in the UK.
Residential, civil engineering or overseas contracts are excluded. Student accommodation is included.
