Housebuilder Berkeley Group backed a Lord's Taverners celebrity cricket match, and contractor Bovis Lend Lease will sponsor part of golf's European Seniors Tour. Regional contractor Cowlin Construction has sponsored second division football club Bristol Rovers for three years.
What does it cost?
Cowlin Construction paid "in excess of six figures", and the other contractors are even more secretive. Outside the industry, Vodafone paid £12m for its four-year contract with England's cricket team, plus bonuses for wins.
Why sponsor sport?
It's a chance to cement personal contacts by inviting your clients and suppliers to the event, and clock up name checks in the quality press – especially useful if you are a new brand.
Which major sporting event has no sponsor?
Wimbledon does not permit any company to advertise directly, but has granted 13 licences to official suppliers, including Slazenger and Robinsons. There are no contractors on the list – yet.

Builders merchant Travis Perkins has just agreed a deal with Rugby Union team Northampton Saints. TP's logo will decorate the shirts of Northampton's first and second team.
