The building services industry will see many changes, says Max Fordham new President of CIBSE. Sustainability will remain a driving force in changing the way the construction industry thinks and operates.
The building services industry is in line for a shake-up, according to Max Fordham, President of CIBSE.

Speaking at his inauguration, Fordham outlined the necessity of sustainability in design. He said engineers should pay attention to the details of construction and influence the conceptual design of buildings.

He discussed how carbon emissions and the climate change levy require building services engineers to review their attitudes to design, and the importance of maintaining a contribution throughout the construction and building use process.

The President highlighted the significance of services in climate change, believing them to be in the pole position of importance.

Fordham also stated: "With the realisation that half the carbon emissions of our society is generated by services in buildings, it is imperative that services improve. This also includes an improvement in site productivity as well as product performance. "We have to reduce carbon emission demand caused by buildings. We must have a 12% reduction by 2010, followed by 22% by 2020, 60% by 2050, and ultimately a 90% reduction.

"How do we achieve this target? We get the building form and construction right; we design building services correctly and get them installed to work; and we pay attention to the source of the energy supply."
