Framwellgate in County Durham is the location of the first purpose built Science Learning Centre in the UK. The aim of the centres is to provide a national network of facilities for the development of science and engineering. The £2.3m building incorporates a number of sustainable features including PV panels, solar water heating, rainwater harvesting, a wind generator and passive natural ventilation. The main contractor for the project was Surgo Construction, the engineering consultant was White Young Green and the architect was Howarth Litchfield Partnership.
