The Health and Safety Executive has published free guidance to help contractors and their clients meet their health and safety requirements.
Use of contractors – a joint responsibility is aimed at firms across a range of activities including maintenance.

Clients and contractors are not always clear about who is responsible for health and safety. The guidance explains that in any relationship both parties have responsibilities. The document covers identifying the job, selecting a suitable contractor and subcontractor, assessing the risks, providing information, instruction and training, co-operation and co-ordination, consulting the workforce and management and supervision.

The document includes case studies showing evidence of what can happen if things go wrong, and gives details of further guidance. The information does not apply to activities covered by the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994.
