Costs and environmental impact have been reduced at a fuel distributor thanks to control and automation.

The introduction of Moeller advanced control and automation hardware at a fuel distributior has reduced potential environmental problems, lowered costs and rasied levels of control.

Having identified two potential problems at its storage facility, the distributor contacted Angel Controls, a local Moeller Automation support partner. The first issue was that tanks could be overfilled, causing spillages that could damage the environment and would be time-consuming and expensive to clean. In addition, there was a risk of cross-contamination – an expensive error if red diesel is mixed with standard diesel.

To overcome the issues, Angel Controls’ solution comprised a Moeller XC200 plc with built-in Ethernet and web browser from the XSystem range, an XV display and various I/O. The modular plc offers high processing capacity and communication. It can be used as the programming interface and for efficienct data transfers between plcs and other Ethernet devices.

The two potential problems have been eliminated and filling and dispensing of fuel are now foolproof. When the hoses are connected to the tanks for delivery, the XV display asks the user to confirm if the correct tank has been chosen; if not, the plc will prevent the fill valve from opening. The XC200 plc also monitors levels in the tanks to prevent overfilling. The web capabilities allows system monitoring from any location.
