Published by the Institute of Plumbing and produced by BRE, Vacuum Drainage Systems Guidance is for use in conjunction with EN 12109. The booklet looks at vacuum drainage systems inside buildings and is aimed at designers, installers and building services students and lecturers who may be considering using a vacuum drainage system or wish to know more about them.
The document covers vacuum drainage systems within buildings, and does not cover their use outside buildings or vacuum sewerage. The principles of vacuum drainage are explained, however design details are not covered. The terms used are as defined in EN 12109.
Topics covered in the first section include a summarisation of the difference between a conventional drainage system and a vacuum drainage system, and under what circumstances should a vacuum drainage system be given consideration.
The second section offers system descriptions, defining the terminology and detailing the transportation process involved in vacuum drainage, giving a full description of system operation.
The third section gives a comprehensive description of the basic components and their individual purposes in the operation of the system, splitting the system into four separate sections: the automatic interface units, the vacuum toilets, the pipework, and the vacuum station.
Finally, design requirements are considered, in particular how the system should be designed to accept discharges from all connected appliances and explains seven factors that must be considered by the designer.
