With the abundance of new DVRs around, many with a multiplexing function, multiplexers still have their place …
Impressive feature list
The Appro MPX-9016 multiplexer from Robot UK offers a 910 x 612 resolution display, fast updates, a fully programmable motion detector and full covert camera facility. The product is available in 16, nine and four camera versions in both colour and monochrome.

It offers a combined multiplexer and fully programmable motion detector in one box that can be used for alarm detection purposes. Whether the requirement is for switching on a VCR or a fully designed alarm system, Robot believes this multiplexer will integrate into the system.

Our Bench Testers wrote in the May 2001 edition of Security Installer: "The designers appear to have gone out of their way to make sure it will fit in with as many different camera and recording device permutations as possible. Several of the more tedious configuration routines have been automated, making it reasonably installer-friendly. The feature list looks impressive.

"The 9016 is a full spec duplex design that allows simultaneous playback and recording (with two VCRs). Installation is greatly simplified with the use of auto VCR recording speed detection and synchronisation, which means it can work with the widest range of devices. Moreover it is able to replay tapes recorded using many other manufacturers' multiplexers."

Five-year warranty
The Genex series of multiplexers from Pelco use the latest in digital video processing to provide multi-camera displays for live viewing and recording. Genex allows live or recorded cameras to be displayed full-screen or combined with others in a picture-in-picture, quad, nine or 16-camera display.

Cameras may also be displayed sequentially in either full-screen or multi-camera format. An adjustable zoom mode provides full control of digital magnification of any camera for closer examination.

An advanced motion detector can prioritise cameras for faster recording and display, independent of record or playback speeds.

Three monitor outputs (Main, Spot and Aux) can be used to display full-screen cameras manually, sequentially, or as a result of alarms and activity detection.

Genex offers intuitive push-button controls for operation, is password-protected, and has on-screen menus for easy system setup. Genex includes a five-year warranty.

Integrated solution
From Videoswitch comes the UK-manufactured VDM multiplexer, which provides an integrated solution for multi-camera recording applications.

Within a single box it combines a multiplexer, a digital hard disk recorder and CD writer for backup.

Ease of use is said to be a key feature of the VDM. Out of the box, it simply requires connecting to the mains supply and one or more cameras, and it will immediately start recording.

Recorded pictures are retained for a prescribed period, typically 31 days, and within that period may be instantly recalled using time and date search or the event log. The image retention period may be set to any number of days and the VDM will automatically calculate the update rate accordingly. Add more hard drive capacity and the update rate will increase, maintaining the specified image retention period. The built-in CD writer makes for easy archiving of incidents for permanent storage.

When it comes to controlling this unit, the built-in keyboard is also designed for ease of use, dedicated keys providing immediate access to all display and replay functions. Special status screens and the menu are called up to gain access to advanced features.

Programming flexibility extends to specifying image quality for each camera, and specific update rates during alarm and activity conditions, and during specified periods in each day.

Universal video de-multiplexer
ClearView Communications has introduced Intelimux, a system for use by the police, courts, town centre operators and retail chains, for replaying multiplexed surveillance tapes. The system automatically identifies and decodes virtually all multiplexer codes, including encoded time and date.

Images may be displayed in full or matrix screen formats. Functions available include live zoom from 1.5 to eight times, image processing, freeze and still image copy to floppy disk.

Intelimux is software upgradeable by email or floppy disk to ensure that it is kept up-to-date with new multiplexer codes and user functions. ClearView provides the Intelimux as a standalone system or integrated into the Videtrac video tape replay, copy and print system.

Multiplexer and recorder
From Vicon Industries comes the AurorAcorD, a combined multiplexer and digital video/audio recorder. It allows 16 channels of video to be recorded with settings for recording rate, sensitivity and quality. Video information is condensed using a Wavelet compression algorithm that is said to maximise recording time without compromising on quality.

In addition, the audio uses a similar codec compression scheme to optimise recording times and limit the effective bandwidth to 6Khz.

The museum search feature will be of particular use to end users. This divides video pictures into 192 motion detection blocks and comes into its own in playback mode. By selecting a block of the scene recorded, and scanning the hard disk pictures at an accelerated playback rate for motion in that square, users don't have to review the whole video at the recorded rate to find particular scenes.

The AurorAcorD can be fitted with one or two hard drives, or one hard drive and a CD-R/W drive. Video and audio are stored in a proprietary format along with alarm, time and titling information for each camera.

More for the small business
Dedicated Micros has combined and enhanced the entry level Digital 4 and Digital 4e range to produce a new compact silver and chrome unit which offers the choice of PPP or Ethernet remote viewing.

With a live quad display, the D4 allows 24-hour simultaneous recording and playback, up to one month's on-board recording, live quad display and DM's user-friendly interface to keep installation and operator training to a minimum.

A new infrared remote control is included as standard and provides the operator with front panel control of the unit, including the ability to change cameras and camera views, the option to play back images from the hard disk, search using the GOTO function and review of the event list.

Marketing communications manager Pauline Norstrom commented: "Smaller applications can now benefit from remote monitoring at an entry level price, along with high-end capabilities such as digitally signed images and built-in activity detection."

Tecton and VCL clinch deal
Multiplexer manufacturer Tecton has signed up VCL as its sole major UK distributor. The Tecton range was previously sold through a number of national distributors, including VCL, but other links have now been severed.

Explaining the choice of a single partner, Tecton MD Chris Hall said: "It included factors such as fast turnaround, minimal out-of-stocks, rapid response maintenance and total UK coverage." Mr Hall completed the deal with VCL sales and marketing director John Prosser on the VCL stand at IFSEC.

Tecton is best known for products such as the Drax and Mosaic multiplexers and the Miniplex.

“Unprecedented” storage capacity

Dedicated Micros says its top-of-the-range multiplexer BX2 provides an “unprecedented” level of in-built storage capacity plus a high-end performance record rate of 50 pictures per second. The new-look silver and chrome unit contains four removable disks with built-in RAID controller giving 12 weeks of storage, or 480GB, at standard rates. A disk diagnostics function alerts the user via a front panel LED as to whether the disk is performing. “Traffic light” alert colours provide an instant visual check for the operator. The unit also provides built-in CD-R as standard for operator convenience and ease of use. Image sequences are digitally signed for authentication purposes. The BX2 delivers direct telemetry control via an ergonomically designed keyboard, complete with multi-directional joystick providing zoom in/zoom out facilities for swift, seamless control of leading manufacturers’ domes. A key feature is BX2’s remote network support, allowing system changes to be made without a site visit. System adjustments such as record rates, day/night schedules and activity grid amendments can be made remotely. This remote feature also acts as a training tool for installers and end users.
