Design of building services is underway on Manchester University's Unlocking the Rylands project.

Consultant Gifford has been commissioned for the design work, which includes investigation of original 1890s systems.

The services will be critical for the protection of valuable books and manuscripts. The Rylands Library, a Grade I-listed building is being restored and extended through a £15 m project.

The library's 1960s extension is being demolished and a new entrance structure, sympathetic to the building's original Gothic architecture, will be built. This will provide improved disabled access via lifts and walkways to all levels and rooms and close controlled environment storage areas.

M&E services in the original Rylands library will be restored and improved to conserve the unique building.
