Gifford is developing a sustainable design for a new museum in Chicester city centre.

The firm has said that the mass of the building will help balance daily temperature changes while a biomass boiler will be installed for winter heating.

The museum is part of a broader scheme to improve the Chichester City Conservation Area. The museum will focus on the local history, archaeology and geology of the district and include an open viewing gallery overlooking the remains of Roman baths within the building. There will also be galleries displaying historic artifacts, a research library and learning spaces.

Gifford said that the temperature, humidity and lighting services have been “paramount” in their designs, as they will have an impact on the preservation and display of the collections.

The museum is scheduled to open in spring 2011.
