Media City UK hires Gleeds to oversee the new BBC media complex in Salford
Gleeds, the management and construction company, has won a major contract with Media City UK (Peel Holdings and Salford URC) for the construction of the new BBC Manchester state-of-the-art media complex in Salford Quays.
Gleeds partner, Stuart Sayer said: “We were selected for the project because of our track record and existing relationship with Peel. We have worked extensively in the Salford Quays area and have direct experience of working with the BBC in other areas of the country.”
The 20-acre site will house the new BBC Manchester Oxford Road campus as well as several departments, including Children, Sport, New Media and Radio Five Live, which will be relocated from London. The project is due for completion by 2010.
The waterside development will also include a public piazza, and there are potential plans for a floating performance areas and a BBC visitor centre.
The developer, Peel Holdings and Salford Regeneration Council are keen to create Media City UK on the 200-acre site where the BBC complex will stand. The idea being that the BBC building will act as an initial catalyst for further regeneration projects in the region.
