Gleeson Homes is to tell potential buyers how energy and water efficient their homes are by publishing environmental performance data in its sales brochures. "Environmental quality is an added value factor – it sits alongside designer kitchens," said Clive Wilding, managing director of Gleeson Homes.

The developer has come up with a sustainability measure, with the help of the consultant WSP, that benchmarks the performance of today's Gleeson homes against a typical 1960's house. The measure assesses such features as water efficiency, use of renewable resources, energy efficiency and embedded energy content. Gleeson has already trained staff in its new environmental sales approach and will print radar graphs of the data it gathers in future scheme sales brochures.

"Car manufacturers print performance details – you know when you buy a new car that it will go from 0 to 60 in ten seconds, so why not print the performance of a home," added Wilding.

Gleeson has additionally developed a sustainability measure to accompany planning applications.
