The Construction Products Association (CPA) reports a buoyant start to 2005, with steady progress expected during the second quarter of the year.

Gauging trends with its construction activity barometer, the Association found a sustained increase in sales volumes for the first quarter of 2005 compared with the corresponding quarter in 2004. Light side manufacturers have seen the strongest sales growth, with a barometer index rating of 70 (50 = no change). However, heavy side sales growth has slowed by poor road and rail investment; its index reading being 48.

Allan Wilen, economics director at the CPA, said: “The industry anticipates a positive sales performance during the second quarter. Growth expectations are strongest amongst light side firms, with an index reading of 67. While, heavy side firms anticipate more modest growth, with an index reading of 55.”
