The government is failing in the reduction of carbon emissions from its offices, according to the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC).

The SDC, the government’s independent advisor and watchdog for sustainable development has suggested that while the government is starting to tackle its sustainable operations targets and improving on waste, water and travel, the emissions from government offices are still not on track.

The findings came from the seventh annual Sustainable Development in Government (SDiG) assessment, which examines central government's performance against the operations and procurement targets and commitments of the Framework for Sustainable Operations on the Government Estate (SOGE).

The government has scored four out of five stars in the SDC's star rating system, up one from last year. A short report is due out in spring 2009.
