The government is believed to have backed an extension to a new science facility, which could be the largest of its type to be built in the UK for 30 years.

Construction of the first phase of the Diamond Synchrotron laboratory, situated in Didcot, Oxfordshire, is due for completion by contractor Costain this autumn. The second phase will add extra x-ray beamlines in the doughnut-shaped facility, which will study the structure of matter and material in medical research. The project manager on the first phase of the scheme was Capita Symonds.
