GREAT ESTATE: The Byker estate in Newcastle was named an English architectural treasure by the United Nations this week. Icomos-UK, the British branch of the UN body that lists and monitors world heritage sites, compiled the list of buildings that are worth protecting. It said Byker should be numbered among the most important innovations of the 20th century.
