Chairperson of the Green Party, Penny Kemp, has challenged the government to give full support to the proposed Home Energy Conservation Bill, and to also ensure it is implemented properly.
Labour MP Desmond Turner introduced the Bill at the end of November, which could see energy saving becoming a local authority legal duty. It aims to reduce domestic fuel bills and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
In a scathing attack on previous governmental inaction Kemp says: "Now we'll see whether the government takes serious action, or once again reneges on its environmental promises and backs out.
"The Bill will set up a licensing scheme to enforce standards of warmth and energy efficiency in homes of multiple occupancy, which are often the most dangerous and coldest accommodation."
She adds: "Labour has promised in two successive general election manifestos to take this action. Its shadow ministers deplored the Tory government for not doing so."
