Handy for the shops: Supermarket chain J Sainsbury has submitted a planning application to Richmond council in south-west London to build 169 homes above one of its stores. 40% of the homes in the £25m project will be affordable housing, with Richmond Churches Housing Trust currently frontrunner to manage them. The project would also include a rooftop garden and a 9290 m2 extension to the supermarket. The first apartments could be open by autumn 2004.
