Clerk of Works Jim Vincent recently ensured that Westminster Abbey became the first of the major heritage sites to opt for Monitor AFx wireless integrated security management technology developed by Chubb Electronic Security.

In essence, Chubb has developed a method of combining and controlling the data from two or more previously independent devices onto one software application with one database, and using an existing IT network as the host. This means that Vincent is effectively replacing the Abbey’s existing, hardwired control platform for its intruder alarm system with a wireless technology that allows other intruder devices and, indeed, further buildings to be added at will.

Monitor AFx has been specifically designed to integrate and manage a given site’s entire electronic security system including (in some cases) the point monitoring of building management sensors. All of this is performed through a Graphical User Interface from a single platform. Previously, each security system would require its own panel and cabling.

At Westminster Abbey, every device is connected using common protocols allowing Vincent to remotely monitor the data collected and also carry out a variety of administrative and maintenance functions without the need for being physically present at each location.
