Surrey Hampshire Borders NHS Trust has awarded a contract for a landmark PFI deal that will provide one of the first of 500 one-stop primary care health centres nationwide
The winner is a consortium comprising MJ Gleeson Group and Norwich Union Public Private Partnership.

Under the deal, the consortium will build 84-bed Farnham Local Care Centre, which will provide a base for a variety of services from community-based health and social care as well as room for four GP practices.

Gleeson will also provide all hard facilities management at the centre for 25 years.

The centre will be built on the Farnham Hospital site, and is due for completion by Summer 2003. The deal, for the construction and on-going maintenance, is worth £21m.

Peter Cutler, a partner at Grant Thornton Corporate Finance, which advised the Trust on the project, said the centre marks a change in the way healthcare is delivered in the community and 'promises to significantly improve the existing services'.
