The installation of a centralised ups system is predicted to save thousands in whole life costs at a Heart Centre at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton.

Wolverhampton’s new Heart Centre is being protected by a centralised ups configuration from Chloride Power Protection.

The ups configuration at the £60 million centre in New Cross Hospital will support mission critical loads. The ups system was designed and specified by Couch Perry & Wilkes; it was engineered by Chloride Power Protection and involved the building, installation and commissioning of two EDP90/250 kVA ups.

Savings in whole life costs will be produced mainly from running and maintenance costs. It is anticipated that the reliability and efficiency of the solution will bring the savings in comparison to cheaper alternatives and a decentralised system; the hospital previously used individual units of under 10 kVA for the theatres and high dependency units. It should allow the hospital to make significant savings over the next 20-30 years.

M&E contractor NG Bailey placed the order for the system, which is also connected to Chloride’s LIFE.net facility. This gives it 24/7 continuous remote monitoring, which will act as an early warning system, highlighting power problems before they become a threat to equipment. New Cross Hospital will provide coronary care and surgery for around 1500 patients per year by 2006.
