Architect HLM won the 2005 BSRIA/BSj Bright Spark Award with an IT-based tool that will help the firm’s designers develop sustainable projects. Called HLM-4D, the new software tool allows architects to navigate a host of design evaluation tools, including a simulation tool, a window design tool, a lighting simulation tool and all legislation affecting energy and carbon performance. This enables sustainability to be designed into a scheme from the outset.

HLM’s building services consultant, Brain Spires, revealed the tool was already helping inform designers on sustainability issues.

He said: “Evidence has shown that the use of HLM 4D on projects has encouraged greater engagement and communication between the members of the design team”.

Presenting the award, Andrew Eastwell, chief executive of BSRIA commented: “The Bright Spark idea behind this software tool is the recognition of the value that other disciplines bring to early design decisions”.

This is the second year that BSRIA/BSj have run the award.
