Deputy prime minister John Prescott’s announcement of “Homes for All” sounds rather hollow if you are a disabled person.

In 81 pages of the accompanying booklet, the only reference to disabled people is a reheated announcement on existing policy.

For disabled people, unsuitable housing turns homes into prisons. Research carried out by John Grooms Housing Association reveals that disabled people wait a disproportionately long time for suitable housing and that insufficient commitment is given to their housing needs, resulting in a shortfall of over 300,000 wheelchair accessible homes in the UK.

John Grooms will continue to call on those in authority to address the housing needs of disabled people by building 10% of all new social housing developments to wheelchair standard. If housing is to be truly sustainable, it must serve all members of the community, whatever their housing needs and this must include disabled people.
