The Nottingham City Council Homewatch initiative has won this year's Institute of Maintenance and Building Management's Security and Protection Award, sponsored by property protection expert Orbis
Under the scheme, which secured its 10,000th property this year, tenants can choose to have intruder alarms, PIR security lighting and heavy-duty locks for doors and windows. Repairs and regular servicing have formed part of the Homewatch programme since 1994.

"Homewatch is a long-term, well-thought-out programme," said Simon Sinclair, Chief Executive of the IMBM.

"Each year an additional 1,000 to 2,500 properties have been secured, resulting in peace of mind for tenants. Yet the Council is not complacent – new security measures are planned."

Andrew Mapstone, Business Development Manager at Orbis, called in a "shining example".
