A resurgence of interest in A level mathematics has raised hopes of an increase in engineering graduate numbers over the next few years.
The Further Mathematics Network said that students sitting A level maths and further maths had increased by 7.5% and 15.5% respectively.
Andrew Ramsay, executive director of the Engineering Council UK, said: “We are delighted with the latest evidence of increasing interest in further mathematics.
“Maths skills are fundamental to the success of professional engineers. The further mathematics A level provides a sound foundation from which to study engineering at university.”
The decrease in homegrown engineering talent has contributed to the skills shortage in building services in recent years.
