Guests staying at the 483 room Arabella Sheraton Grand Hotel in South Africa’s Cape Town can enjoy uninterrupted views across the city, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, the mountains and the harbour, thanks to floor to ceiling windows the facade provides.

The structurally glazed facade of the hotel features over 500 flat glass panels with double clad skins constructed by Mazor Engineering. The panels were designed and constructed so that none of the aluminium frames are visible, giving the impression of one continuous wall of glass. In total, 12,000 square metres of structural glazing was installed. Mazor specified Dow Corning 993 Structural Glazing Silicone Sealant for all the bonding and weather sealing of the structurally glazed curtain walling for the project.

Dow Corning 993 sealant was specified to bond the glass in the frames, and Mazor worked with Dow to establish quality-control systems for the application of Dow Corning 993, which requires stringent factory controls in the glazing assembly area.

Dow Corning 993 is a two-part, neutral curing silicone sealant specifically developed to structurally bond glass and metal to other construction materials. It has excellent adhesion to a wide range of substrates including coated, enamelled and reflective glass, anodised and powder coated aluminium and stainless steel. 993 demonstrates significant stability through a wide temperature range of -55 to +120°C, and is formulated to provide excellent resistance to weathering, says the company.
