Four out of five MPs believe the housing crisis is the biggest issue in their constituency.

In a cross-party survey for homelessness charity Shelter, more than 40% of the 98 MPs questioned said their constituents had complained of high rents causing financial hardship.

A third said high prices meant constituents could not own their homes.

Shelter’s campaign director, Ben Jackson, said: “This poll shows that housing is one of the issues that, when people look to the future, they simply see becoming worse, not better.”

Helen Clarke, Labour MP for Peterborough, said: “Four out of five casework discussions in my constituency are about housing and when I go door-knocking, it’s all about housing.

“Unless you get proper housing you are not going to get proper health, education, law and order or economic prosperity.”

The poll was carried out in July.
