The Heating and Ventilating Contractors’ Association has threatened to withdraw from its seat on the council of CORGI over the issue of registration of work on gas appliances.

“Our members are so disillusioned over this issue that they may withdraw from CORGI, either individually, or as an Association,” said the HVCA’s director Robert Higgs.

CORGI’s Complete Safety Initiative requires firms to register the installation of all gas appliances in residential premises from 1 April. Installers would have to pay a fee of up to £5 per installation.

“The last 18 months has seen CORGI spreading their wings beyond gas safety issues,” said Higgs. “If they decide to change their rules, it affects our members. We have tried to restrain them, with very limited success. The Health and Safety Executive has decided that it doesn’t want to get involved and I’m appalled at that. The HSE, and government generally, have acted in a dreadful way.”

The Association’s campaign to get CORGI to withdraw its proposed rule changes is now at ministerial level.
