The book is specifically concerned with the defects construction professionals are likely to meet in day-to-day repair and renovation work. It does not give specific advice on how to avoid defects in the design and construction of new projects.
The book is set out as a reference guide to be used following the detection of a defect. The contents of the book are arranged to allow the reader to progress from a starting point which considers the symptoms and materials involved in the defect, moving on to highlight less obvious symptoms that may only become apparent after carrying out tests.
There is a description of each commonly known defect, which starts with an examination of the information that should be collected about the defect. It then explains how this information can be measured and analysed to diagnose the cause of the defect. Possible causes and their symptoms are discussed in turn, together with ways to check the that right diagnosis has been made.
At the end of each defect description there is a section giving advice on how to cure defects once they have been identified. This advice is in general terms and does not discuss the pros and cons of proprietary solutions.
The book looks in detail at all parts of a building and structure, including: the roof and coverings, taking into account chimneys and rainwater disposal; external walls; external joinery, including windows and doors; floors and ceilings; internal walls, partitions and joinery; piped water services; drainage services; electrical services; and heating appliances.
