The IEE, the UK's electrical network companies and three leading universities are joining forces to launch the Power Academy. Backed by government, the initiative aims to combat a serious shortfall in the number of power engineers in the country.
Around 25% of the industry's most experienced and senior engineers, who keep the country's electricity networks running, are due to retire within the next five to ten years and there is no sign of them being replenished. The Power Academy will aim to reverse the decline in students opting for degree courses in power engineering disciplines.
UK energy minister Stephen Timms said: "We are committed to maintaining reliable and secure power supplies and that means ensuring that the people who manage this process are of the highest calibre. The Power Academy will prove an invaluable asset in nurturing expertise in the electricity generation field. It will have a key role in helping to power the nation."
