More than 2,000 visitors travelled to the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham, for the first ever IIPSEC (International IP Security Exhibition and Conference).
A total of 48 exhibitors – including names such as Telindus, Lenel, IndigoVision and Nedap – displayed their products and services over the three days of the exhibition aimed at promoting, supporting and developing IP as "the future technology within the security industry".

The show had an educational bias and, as well as viewing the stands, visitors were able to attend free lectures in the seminar suite. Many installers also got "hands-on" experience in the Learning Zone.

A number of seminars were largely aimed at installers, including "The dawning of a new age" by James Carrigan of Baxall and Mark Peers of Petards Vision, "Let's get totally networked" by Dominic Bruning of Axis Communications and Keith Bloodworth of Computer Networks, and "The challenges facing our industry" with Alastair MacLeod of Visimetrics, Mike Holt of Sirrus and Andrew Minton of InfoScape. Other seminars were aimed primarily at end users.

The sessions, including questions and answers from the floor, were well attended by installers keen to get educated in this sector. Said one visitor: "We came here because it was a chance to see the major players in one location."

Mike Holt of Sirrus told delegates: "Analogue video is up for retirement. Prices of IP equipment are falling monthly and all of us here are in the vanguard of the new technology."

Alastair MacLeod warned that lack of installer expertise was one of the reasons there were as yet so few networked CCTV installations. A spokesman for the organisers said they were very pleased with the turnout for the first show of its kind. Next year they planned to double the size of the exhibition which would, once again, be held at the Motorcycle Museum. A number of products which were showcased at the event will be featured in a Security Installer article on IP networking equipment in next month's issue.
