Constructing Excellence has released its 10th construction industry key performance indicators (KPI), a decade after the Egan report.

The results showed client satisfaction with the product has increased from 82% last year to 83%, while client satisfaction with service was up from 75% last year to 77% this year.

Productivity has risen again this year from a median of £42,000 value-added per employee last year to £45,500 this year. And profitability improved slightly from 8.2% last year to 9.6% this year.

2008 has shown the fourth successive year of improvement in construction cost, down 1.7%, an indication that innovation is cutting the underlying cost of construction. Construction time fared less well, showing only a 0.5% improvement.

The overall industry accident incidence rate improved from 946 last year to 865 in 2008 – its best-ever reported performance, representing a significant 36% improvement over the last 10 years.

Pay levels continued to increase, with the median gross weekly wage now at £495 per week, up from £481 last year. But employee satisfaction declined slightly, with 46% of employees rating satisfaction at eight out of 10 this year compared with 47% last year. Staff turnover rose for the first time in six years, from 5% last year to 6.3% this year, while sickness absence remained level at a median of 1.7 days per employee.
