Clare Roberts has won The Young Woman Engineer of the Year 2001 Award.
Clare, 29, is a design engineer with Yorkshire Electricity. Having joined the company as a clerical assistant she was inspired to follow a more technical career path. Her ambition saw her become the first non-graduate to complete the company’s graduate scheme. Clare has now completed an ONC and HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Her current role focuses on the design of minimum cost electrical schemes for high and low voltage connections. Clare intends to follow the example of last year’s winner Samantha Hubbard in promoting engineering as a career: “Winning this award enables me to share my experience of engineering with others wanting to go into the field,” she says. The award was presented by James Dyson at the BT Conference Centre, London on 16 January.
