Ventilation towers with solar chimneys
The design team strove for a holistic approach to the control of the thermal environment at Lancaster University’s Postgraduate Statistics Centre. Two particular challenges were the architectural aspirations for large areas of glazing and the dense occupancy levels.
The incorporation of the centre’s ventilation towers with solar-driven chimneys maximises the floor area and exploits the south-facing facade. The towers sit outside the floorplate and provide cooling in the summer and recycling/recovery of heat in the winter.
The judges applauded this innovative solution, which meets fully the sustainability commitment of the client.
Runners-up
BDP
Guerrilla lighting
BDP Lighting has developed its own version of guerrilla lighting, the technology which famously projected a picture of Gail Porter on the Houses of Parliament. On the sound of an air horn, a building/space is lit and photo-graphed, then the lighting is switched off and the guerrillas move on to the next site. The event looks spontaneous, but is carefully orchestrated with all of the lights designed in advance to create maximum visual impact. The aim is to create awareness of the need for sustainable and considered urban lighting design.
Gifford
Mind maps
Gifford’s building services engineers have developed a suite of visual tools and check lists which presents complex information easily, provides perspective and assists in the delivery of a clear vision at the critical early stages of a project. The maps break down barriers, encourage engagement and demonstrate solutions in a holistic way.
Hurleypalmerflatt
Direct cooling comparison
As part of a £25m data centre project for a large investment bank, elevated chilled water cooling and CO2 cooling have been installed side by side to allow the client to assess each system in terms of overall performance, installation and maintenance. This is the first time a direct comparison in a live environment has been undertaken.
Morgan Professional Services
GlaxoSmithKline M&E
MPS undertook an analysis of a significant number of previous projects to enable it to establish benchmarks for the type, number and capacity of services required in each type of laboratory. The data was used to develop modules which included provision for all necessary services for a wide range facilities.
Red Engineering Design
Green data centre package
Red’s work with data centre clients has led to a package of measures which typically cut energy use and CO2 by more than 30%. The measures include water-cooled chillers with open-circuit cooling towers in place of air cooling; free cooling; and variable speed fans and pumps.
